#Soundresearch No. 13 - One mic - Zmelkoow: “Batman”

Slowly, but at the same time fast, there were more and more people around one microphone. As I now watch these recordings I cannot grasp how I got the courage to do it. But as usual when we are in a creative time, we don’t even perceive the strange things we do. But, as I have yet to process this subject, it might not even be like that .
Recording on one microphone with multiple musicians automatically defines who is the priority and who isn’t , who it is we need to defend against and who to fear. We could say the singer versus the drummer. The weak against the strong. Differently to everyday life, we immediately show on the recording sessions who is vulnerable and who can ruin the take. That is why there is a need for balance.
Beside the producer, moving around the microphone also throws the musician inside the game and we can at once see how every person has a different view regarding the recording, what is important and what isn’t. But everyone everywhere is undeniably aware that vocals need to be heard. It sounds logical, doesn’t it? But it is not always the case. When one doesn’t have a 100% responsibility for its own actions, they can transfer the responsibility to another person or to the post production and do things differently. In the case of using one microphone, the recording is immediately put at stake. The responsibility is in the hands of the people and not the technology. It’s in the immediate performance, not in post production.
The awareness that there is no possibility of correction makes people cooperate. If we don’t help each other, we fall into the chasm. It’s extraordinarily interesting how one microphone enables people to connect. It functions as a torch of peace, a holy grail, to which people show respect. Believe it or not, this is more or less how it looks like when making recordings - we observe, adapt, try out and hope for the best. It is kind of logical that we cooperate when we are in danger or we are faced with defeat, meaning that the roles we are accustomed to and are already worn out, fairly quickly melt. And as quickly as the melt, they can equally quickly return to its previous form, but with the difference that our consciousness now has a recording of an experience that becomes a mirror for our acts. Perhaps it all sounds just some philosophical writing, but it’s not. Or maybe it is, who knows.
At that time we put a lot of effort on the acoustics of the space, as if it was its fault for the way our recordings sounded. We moved panels, covered stuff with blankets, put other things on the carpet etc. In the future we will get to even bigger absorbents. However, if you’re attentive you can notice that this is not a collaboration, but the unacceptance of something that is. We want to sound good, but we are not prepared to change our playstyle - instead we change the space. In other words: we are not prepared to change ourselves, just everything around us.
These stories show that if truthfulness is our principal value, we can achieve much for our personal growth. From every awkward situation we can draw a personal experience that, through music, helps us to unravel our behavioral patterns and gently show ourselves what we are. As light through a prism, everything that #Soundresearch shows us multiplies on other aspects of life.
To record ourselves - so that we can see who we are and how we behave.

Počasi, a hitro, je vedno več ljudi okoli enega mikrofona. Ko sedaj gledam te posnetke, mi sploh ni jasno kako sem si to upal. A vendar se ponavadi, ko smo v kreativnem času, sploh ne zavedamo kako čudne stvari delamo. Čeprav je res, da moram to temo še predelati in morda temu sploh ni tako .
Snemanje na en mikrofon z več glasbeniki avtomatično določa, kdo je prioriteta in kdo ne. Koga moramo braniti in koga se bati. Lahko rečemo pevec proti bobnarju. Šibek proti močnemu. Tako, da že takoj, za razliko z vsakodnevnim okoljem, pokažemo kdo je na snemanju ranljiv in kdo zna prvi porušiti posnetek. Zato je potrebno ravnovesje.
Premikanje okoli mikrofona postavi v igro poleg producenta tudi glasbenika in takoj lahko opazimo, kako ima vsak drugačen pogled na posnetek in kaj je komu pomembno. Vendar je povsod nezmotno to, da se vsi zavedajo, da se mora slišati vokal. Saj se zdi logično, vendar ni vedno tako, saj ko človek nima v rokah 100 % odgovornosti za svoja dejanja, lahko prenese odgovornost na drugo osebo ali postprodukcijo in se stvari loti drugače. V primeru enega mikrofona, pa je posnetek postavljen takoj na kocko. Odgovornost je v rokah ljudi in ne tehnike. Je v takojšnji izvedbi in ne v postprodukciji.
Zavedanje, da ni mogoče popravljati, ljudi spravi v sodelovanje. Če si ne pomagamo, pademo v prepad. Nenormalno zanimivo je, kako en mikrofon omogoči ljudem, da se povežejo. Deluje kot bakla miru, kot sveti gral, kjer se ljudje obnašajo s spoštovanjem. Verjeli ali ne, tako nekako se dogaja tudi na teh snemanjih, kjer se opazuje, prilagaja, poskuša in upa, da nam bo uspelo. V bistvu je kar logično. Ljudje sodelujemo, ko smo ogroženi oz. vsi skupaj izpostavljeni porazu, kar pomenmi, da naše vloge, ki smo jih vajeni in so postale že železne od uporabe, se tukaj dokaj hitro stopijo. Tako hitro kot se stopijo, pa se tudi povrnejo v prvotno stanje, s to razliko, da ima naša zavest sedaj zapisano eno doživetje, ki nam postane ogledalo na naša dejanja. Morda zveni zelo filozofsko kar pišem in kar nekam v prazno, a ni tako. Morda pa je… Kdo ve.
V tem obdobju smo zelo veliko dali na akustiko prostora. Kot bi bila ona kriva za naše posnetke. Premikali smo panele, pokrivali stvari z dekami, dajali stvari na tepih, itd. V prihodnje bomo prišli še do večjih absorberjev. A če ste pozorni, lahko opazite, da to ni sodelovanje, ampak je nesprejemanje nečesar kar je. Mi si v prostoru želimo zveneti dobro, a nismo za to pripravljeni spremeniti igranja, smo pa pripravljeni spremeniti prostor. Z drugimi besedami, nismo pripravljeni spremeniti sebe, ampak vse okoli nas. Iz teh zgodb, če imamo kot prvo vrednoto resnicoljubje, uspemo veliko narediti na osebni rasti. Iz vsake nerodne situacije lahko potegnemo osebno izkušnjo, ki nam pomaga preko glasbe razvozlati naše vzorce obnašanja in nam nežno pokazati kakšni smo. Kot svetloba preko prizme, se vsaka stvar, ki jo nam razkrije #Soundresearch, podvaja na še ostalih področjih življenja.
